Mission Statement
Signal Culture encourages creation of new work, building of community, and connection to history in the field of experimental media art by providing artists, researchers, and innovators with residencies, resources, and exhibition opportunities.
History & Vision
Signal Culture was founded in 2012 by Jason Bernagozzi, Debora Bernagozzi & Hank Rudolph with the idea to create an environment where innovative artists, toolmakers, curators, critics, and art historians who are contributing to the field of experimental media art will have time and space to make new work and to interact with one another. In addition to the residency program, we wanted to organize public exhibitions and produce resources for researchers and practitioners in the field of experimental media art as a way to expand support beyond the residency.
From the beginning, we made it our intention to be as inclusive as possible and to focus on serving our community. With that in mind, we have never charged an application fee or residency fee. We have also kept residencies short, so that residents who have other jobs or have families can participate. Residents who are parents are welcome to bring their families with them. We also ensure that Signal Culture exhibitions always include fees to be paid to the artists.
In January of 2014, launched its residency program, which ran for a little over 6 years in New York state, hosting over 450 artists, researchers, and toolmakers from all over the US and close to 30 countries! Artwork by our residents has been shown in museums, galleries, and festivals around the world. Machines have been built, books and articles written, exhibitions curated, and, most importantly, so many wonderful relationships have been built through our residency program. We have been busy building and testing our new studios in Loveland, Colorado, and we are finally ready to welcome residents!
In addition to all that, we’ve curated exhibitions, produced 2 Signal Culture Cookbooks, and created a suite of realtime experimental media apps.
