Alexander Hahn


Alexander Hahn is a digital media artist living in New York. His work addresses the electronic image as a technological metaphor for perception, memory and dream, its existence oscillating between lighting up and blanking out, between sensory presence, mental apparition and oblivion.  A graduate at the Zurich University of Arts with a master's degree in art education (1979, he participated in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in New York (1981).


His single channel videos, installations, and prints have been presented worldwide in museums, galleries and festivals since the late 1970s, most recently in solo exhibitions at Kunstraum Oktogon, Bern (2015), Harvestworks, NY (2013), Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Genoa, Italy (2008), Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea, Ferrara, Italy (2007), Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Austria (2007), Kunstmuseum Solothurn, Switzerland (2007); bi-personals at ce|contemproary, Milano, Italy (2014), San Francisco Moma (2008); group shows at the CAFA Museum, Beijing (2014), Anthology Archives, NY (2013), Musée Jenisch, Vevey, Switzerland (2013), India Art Fair, New Delhi (2013), Art Cologne, Germany (2010), National Art Museum of China, Beijing (2009), International Center of Photography, New York (1995) etc.


Hahn's work has been recognized by numerous grants, residencies and awards including NYSCA, NYFA, and Art Matters; Experimental TV Center, Bogliasco Foundation, Pro Helvetia and DAAD fellowships; World Wide Video Festival Installation Award, The Hague, The Netherlands, Laser d'Oro, VideoArt Festival, Locarno, Switzerland, Grand Prix Festival International du Jeune Vidéo, Montréal, etc.


His work is in many private and public collections, among them the Musée Pompidou, Paris, Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM), Karlsruhe, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Kunsthaus Zürich, Kunstmuseum Solothurn, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Nestlé Collection, Vevey.


In addition to reviews in Art Papers, Radio WBAI, NY, Huffington Post, Il Manifesto, Milano, Basler Zeitung, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Berliner Zeitung and others, various catalogs about his work have been published, most notably "Alexander Hahn - Works 1976-2006," Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg, Germany (2007)
