Martin Back

Martin Back is an artist, composer, performer and educator. He has created work for live cinema, single channel video, video installation; interactive computer music, sound sculpture, music for fixed media, phonography; and collage. His current work considers Second Order Cybernetic theory as both the conceptual and practical foundation for the design of autonomous, self-sustaining aesthetic systems, which produce organized and emergent behaviors in real time. Underlying this work is a deep commitment to a non-modern ontology that revels in and promotes a per se experience of art, sound and performance rather than an experience that is theorized.

His artwork has been shown, auditioned, and performed in festivals, gallery spaces, and on radio around the world in venues such as High Mayhem Emerging Arts, Santa Fe, NM; the Dallas Museum of Art; KCKU Radio in Ottawa, Canada; Antimatter Underground Film Festival, Victoria, B.C., Canada; Framework Radio, Estonia; and the 2nd Annual Noisefloor Music Festival, Staffordshire University, Stafford, United Kingdom.

Martin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Moving Image Arts from the College of Santa Fe and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art/New Media from the University of North Texas. He is currently Senior Lecture of New Media Art in the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas.
