Jiji Yu

Born and raised Chinese, Jiji explores using LEDs in her work. More than an electronic unit that changes colors, she finds LED a medium that renders life for objects and sculptures. Embedded LEDs such as the sleep light on an old Mac are intentions of making objects more personable and communicative. Her LED investigation started with a breadboard and the simplest blink code, and two years later she started to put LEDs in her clothings. Jiji’s LED clothing includes sport pant, tank top, fake nails, mask, and body jewelry. Jiji enjoys wearing her LED clothings to public events, and she feels so confident and comfortable with her body when she wears lights. She envisions a lifestyle in which LED clothing is normalized, designed, and has suitable light patterns for different events.

During her residency at signal culture, Jiji wants to work on her printed circuit board (PCB) project. After teaching herself how to design and order PCBs for practical purposes, Jiji starts to think about ways of challenging the conforming qualities of PCB. She wants to make a “business card”, a small object packed with personality, in PCB first. She is working with elements that are unfamiliar to her before, such as low voltage and small ICs.
