Erik Piil
Erik Piil is a media conservator and technologist based in Brooklyn, NY. Erik has worked on a variety of media preservation projects for institutions such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and Anthology Film Archives. He currently teaches video preservation at New York University.
Project Description:
Opencleaner is an attempt to leverage hardware with open-source tendencies for use in the ever-evolving field of media preservation. Specifically, the project focuses around the creation of a template for assembling, testing, and operating an open-reel magnetic video tape cleaner. When used in conjunction with other conservation treatments like incubation (baking), tape cleaning assists in minimizing the effects of tape degradation such as binder hydrolysis ("sticky shed syndrome") during the playback/reformatting process. The project is maintained in a GitHub repository and can be viewed at https://github.com/epiil/open-cleaner
