David Isaac Hecht

 

David Isaac Hecht is a transdisciplinary practitioner, researcher, and organizer whose projects branch through building communities, technologies, knowledge structures, physical structures, and collaborative labor practices.

 

He is a founding member of The Cybernetics Library, a member and director of the Prime Produce Apprentice Cooperative, a member and former Internal Communications Coordinator for The Architecture Lobby, and coordinator of design/build and research for Seeds to Soil (a non-profit org focused on building community through urban ecology, community gardening, citizen science, and participatory design). He is also developing a zero-waste/zero-budget fabrication practices focused on replicable processes using reclaimed materials.

 

David’s research has used representational media to expose how disciplinary structures mediate relationships between the design of spaces and the configuration of bodies and subjectivities in those spaces. With the Cybernetics Library, David is examining how knowledge organization practices have shaped the reciprocal relationships between technology and society, with a focus on refiguring that history on marginalized and excluded communities, and special attention to publishing and media art practices.

 

His work has been published in AD (Architectural Design), Architectural Research Quarterly, The ARPA Journal, and the Are.na blog. His work and projects of which he has been part have been exhibited at The Queens Museum, The Center for Architecture NY, The School for Poetic Computation, Current Museum, the DWeb Summit by The Internet Archive, HKW Berlin, and the MAK Center in LA. He was also a co-organizer of the Cybernetics Conference in 2017. David originates from Brooklyn, NY, where he currently resides along with a couple of human roommates and Dr. Jack Tootlebottoms, a very accomplished cat.
