Carrie Dashow

 

Carrie Dashow is a New York based interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of performance, video and visual arts. Her often participatory work ranges from community, historical and municipal based projects examine the undercurrents of authority, subjectivity and an indebted relationship to location. The resulting combinations of performance, video, books, structures and songs involve the audience in tactile, truer than true experiences, providing the opportunity for re-negotiation. Her participatory-style performances amongst diverse audiences reveal a momentary sense of community and possibility. Much of her work takes place in social and collective situations, either on the street, in communities, galleries or classes. Her work has been exhibited at venues internationally from St. Petersburg, Seoul, Paris and Berlin to New York, L.A. and Pittsburg, PA. Including P.S. 1/MOMA, UCLA Hammer Museum, ExitArt, Jessica Murray Projects, Gigantic ArtSpace, Printed Matter, Eyebeam, Andy Warhol Museum, in mines, public parks, campgrounds, campervans and her living room. Some awards include a Merit Scholarship to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Experimental Television Center’s Finishing Funds (02 and 07), Media Alliance’s Radio and Sound Art Grant, a BESSIE for the Mir2 collaborative space station, a NYSCA Independent Project Grant and NY State Music Fund award for the Subliminal History of NY State; Route of Progress tour of 2007. Ms. Dashow holds a BFA in New Genres from The San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA in Integrated Electronic Arts from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. She has taught Video and media classes at Universities throughout NYC, and is currently living in Catskill, New York, growing things and watching the Wall of Manitou.
